according to our gods, this is the way it should be played
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8mCTThOE7A after watching 3 different "cover" videos with all sorts of crazy tuning how come i figured it out in standard tuning with a drop D so how do i play then use you typical D chord pattern but dont use the high E string ============================= i use this as the intro on the G & B string 6&7 / 4&5 / 4&3 / 2&3 (repeat until virtigo) ============================= the C# break down part (bar cord) ============================= open D A D strings and harmonics on the G B E at 12th fret 4th fret with attached D pattern (no high E) ============================= same D patterns (no high E) 9&10 / 7&8 / 6&7 then up to 16&17 / 14&15 / 13&14 ============================= then move this chord around here and there to match the madness as for the outro 3 / 5 / 3 / 2 on the G string i kinda accidentally found this out. it was literally a matter of luck. the fact that i had the guitar tuned to 440 with a drop D played it i dont know how many times last night and 3 times this morning i know it's not the greatest, but it seems to be the easiest (as in you dont have to totally fuck with the tuning) |

Nice work.
Could you maybe do a video and upload to hear/see the result? I do my version with the standard F#F#GGAA SY tuning. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ph9bWs8mpGc

Dr Chocolate, but of course you understand that your way is just similar sounding notes?
music is not just notes, there is nothing like two strings tuned in unison...

Exactly, there is a unique "chorus-type" effect when you tune strings in unison that cannot be replicated, even with effects units.

that's true, and i was even thinking, can you change the high E to either a B string, or upping it a notch to C that way it's mostly all 1 finger you will need for it.
and yes i will make a video of it gimme a day or so |

I always just use the DDDDAA but kind of bounce back and forth between the rhythm/"lead" parts

i just got to wait til my friend gets here, that way she can be in charge of the camera. been playing this over and over and over. i think changing the high E string to a B would be better for the sound, but i'm just talking about how it can be easy to play Sonic Youth on a normally tuned guitar. but after playing this several times. it would actually be better if it was with 2 guitars. one tuned all to D and another tuned to GGGBBB. but this is starting to sound like i'm going to need to cut a new fret nut. but fuck that. this is about playing it easier
should i mention my version of TOM VIOLENCE that i only use a capo? but honestally, if i was going to put time into "that guitar" then i would get a new fret nut and file it down myself not like it takes long, but even if i could rig 2 extra stings into a guitar (ala Steve Albini's 16 string guitar) then i would double up the with certain strings the only 4 i need F# B C# A (aka 22x22x) or was it 22xx22 either way, that's how ive played it for decades |
